Fishing Hatch Report - May 15, 2005

Green River:

The Green is starting to come up a little with runoff, but the fishing is still good. The best is on the Bridger-Teton National F orest around the Kendall Bridge area. Nymphing with brighter patterns like Purple Princes and Copper Johns have been working the best. I like to use sz 14 and sz 16 in these. Try a heavily weighted stone fly pattern in the deeper runs. There are some stones breaking loose and trout will eat if the fly is presented right.

New Fork River:

The New Fork is staying very clear and has plenty of water for float fishing. It has been the best spring I can remember for catching large browns. Streamers like Big Horn Specials and White Zuddlers have been working great. The water temperature is down, so instead of stripping streamers, try dead drifting with a sink tip. This has worked well for our guide trips.

Soda Lake:

Soda is fishing great for the amount of trout estimated in the lake (about 2000). I prefer Soda in the late evening after the wind dies down. Fish a Plate River Special trailing an ant or scud. The catching is slow but the trout are big!

Get out and enjoy summer fishing in Wyoming!

Tight Lines,
John Ross

P.S. If you have a good fish story, or any questions on fly fishing, e-mail me at 2rivers@trib.com. I always like to hear about the big one that got away!
