This
moose took a stroll through downtown Pinedale Tuesday afternoon, stopping
traffic on the highway to cross the street near Moose Creek Trading Company
and Stockman's, and then on into north Pinedale.
The
latest round of snowstorms have added about another 2-4" of snow here in
town and about another foot or so up on the ski mountain, which is great
for cross-country skiing, but still not quite enough for White Pine to
open up yet for the season, so the word is the resort won't be open this
weekend. Snowmachiners are finding some places to sled in the Wyoming Range
on about 4-8" of snow, but there still isn't quite enough to sled on up
by Green River Lakes or on the Continental Divide Snowmobile Trail yet.
The
local Wyoming Game & Fish office cautions motorists to be on the watch
for wildlife crossing and on the roads this time of year. Deer and antelope
are still migrating and are notorious for jumping out in front of your
car when you least expect it. Black moose at night on dark roads are very
difficult to see and not something you want to suddenly find in your headlights
when driving on icy roads. Read the Sublette County Journal article at
right for more about wildlife on the roads this year.
Backcountry
Avalanche Hazard Forecast
The
Bridger-Teton National Forest has daily updates for backcountry avalanche
hazard and weather forecasts available on the internet. Snowmobilers and
cross-country skiers can use this information to determine the danger of
avalanche in the areas they plan to be in. The information rates avalanche
danger for low, mid, and high elevations for mornings and afternoons. There
is also a daily and 3-day mountain weather forecast on the page.

White
Pine Update
OPENING
SOON! The latest word is that the resort will open in early December (but
not this weekend). They're finishing up interior work on the Day Lodge
and waiting for another good snow storm to build up the base to open for
the season. If snow conditions allow, they could open the 2nd weekend of
December. The ski area has received 8+ inches of new snow since Monday
night, giving them 1-1/2 to 3-1/2 feet of snow. Enthusiasts can call the
Sno-Phone at 307-367-6606 for a recorded ski update message or go to White
Pine's web site for the latest information. www.whitepineski.com.

Where
can I go ice fishing?
Any
waters which have an open season are also open to ice fishing. Wyoming
only has a few waters which have seasonal closures and those places are
listed as closed in the regulations. Right now the main difficulty is finding
a water which has adequate ice thickness to insure safety. Even though
the early cold snap in November created an early ice cover on many waters,
anglers are urged to use extreme caution. However, if we receive "normal"
December weather, it should only be a few weeks until most waters will
offer ice fishing opportunities. Wyoming

Temperatures
have been dipping into the burrr-minuses at night, but warming up comfortably
into the 20s during the day. Some folks are still running around in t-shirts,
if you can believe that. Skiers are anxiously awaiting the promised snow
so they can hit the slopes and test out the new runs at White Pine ski
area, while snowmobilers tune up their sleds and gaze impatiently skyward
as well. The Bald Eagles have returned to their perches in the cottonwood
trees along the Green River. Ranchers have started some supplemental feeding
of cattle and horses, and hoping the winter isn't too hard considering
how sparse the hay supply is this year. We're in this wonderful inbetween
lull, no longer fall, but not quite winter.
Thanksgiving
is just around the corner, and the country still doesn't have a new President,
which makes us ponder our moment in time and things we are grateful for...
-
Like
the fact that in all of Sublette County we still don't have a single stop
light...
-
That
a traffic jam here means you've encountered a cattle drive down the middle
of the highway and you must wait patiently for cows and cowboys to move
along...
-
On
any given morning you can wake up to find a deer or moose in your front
yard...
-
That
living here means if your car breaks down out in the middle of nowhere,
you can almost guarantee that every car that goes by with a 23 license
plate will stop and ask if you need help...
-
That
the air we breath is clean and our view of the night sky is filled with
stars from horizon to horizon...
We
are truly grateful for our unhurried way of life and that we live in Wyoming,
still the real west!
Happy
Thanksgiving Everyone!
Upcoming
Holiday Festivities
The
holiday season is just around the corner, and many wonderful events are
in store. The big news for winter recreation is the season opening of
White Pine Ski Area, which will be anytime after this weekend, as soon
as the snowpack allows. The Museum of the Mountain Man will host their
Annual
Wreath Auction on Friday, December 1st. The Pinedale "Shop at Home
Weekend", sponsored by the Pinedale Area Chamber of Commerce, will
be December 8th & 9th with a Holiday Craft Fair, Pictures with Santa
at
the Knotty Pine Plaza, Winter Parade, and Tree Lighting Ceremony.
The Parade will be at 5 pm on Saturday with the Tree Lighting Ceremony
following at the Sublette County Courthouse lawn.
Snowmobiling
& Skiing
We're
still waiting for the snow the weatherman promised a couple of days ago
after giving us a small dusting of the white fluffy stuff just to tantalize
us. All he sent us this week instead was some very cold air, with temperatures
dipping to -10 at night and daytime highs hovering around 20 degrees.
There
still isn't quite enough snow yet to either snowmobile or downhill ski
on, but cross-country skiing is good. There's about 20" of snow from about
9,000 feet and above. All trailheads are pretty much shut off now from
vehicle access due to snow, so you'll need to either ski or snowmachine
in. White Pine is all set to go this weekend as soon as they get a bit
more base.
All
Forest Service campgrounds are open for public use for winter recreation,
with no fees being charged since no services are available. Restrooms are
unlocked and can be used in developed recreation sites. Along the Continental
Divide Trail, there are open restrooms at the main parking area at the
forest boundary on the Green River Lakes Road as well as the Strawberry
Toilet near Fish Creek on the Union Pass Road. Trail grooming reports for
the Continental Divide Snowmobile Trail will be available beginning December
1st from the Wyoming Snowmobiling web site at http://spacr.state.wy.us/sphs/snow/.
We're
ready...bring on the snow!!

Pine Update
*
Local
Focus
We
woke up to about 6" of light, fluffy snow this morning, and the prediction
is for more on the way through the weekend. Snowmobiles have replaced ATVs
in the back of local pickups and everyone is getting excited about heading
out for snowmobiling fun over the weekend. We still need more snow to create
a good base to get above the rocks in the lower valleys, but there's more
snow up high, and some folks have already been out sledding in the Wyoming
Range. Stay tuned to our Snowmobiling page
for the latest information on current conditions, we'll be updating it
soon. For information on businesses that provide snowmobile rentals and
shuttle services, please check out our Business
pages here on Pinedale Online.
Elk
Season Extended near Big Piney
The
Wyoming Game & Fish Department has determined that more elk harvest
is needed so they have extended the season in elk area 94 near Big Piney.
Area 94, which was originally scheduled to end Nov. 5, has been extended
for antlerless elk only through Nov. 10 in that portion of the area north
of Middle Piney Creek for both general licenses and area 94 type 1 and
6 licenses. In addition, 100 hunters with any unused Wyoming elk license
will be allowed to hunt from Nov. 15 through Jan. 31 on private lands that
were recently enrolled in the Game and Fish Department's Hunter Management
Program. To participate, these hunters must obtain a free permit to accompany
their unused elk license. These permits will be available to the first
100 hunters showing up in person at the Marbleton Fire Hall from 2 p.m.
to 10 p.m on Monday, Nov. 13.
Elk population increases have occurred in numerous areas in Wyoming, and
the problem is not unique to Big Piney. "Warm fall weather with late onset
of winter, frequently reduces elk hunter success because hunters have more
difficulty stalking and tracking game," said Bernie Holz, the Wyoming Game
and Fish Department's Jackson Region wildlife supervisor. "We haven't met
our elk harvest goals since the fall of 1994 in many of the region's hunt
areas." Holz adds there will also be no hunting near the North Piney and
Bench Corral elk feedgrounds after Nov. 14.
White
Pine Update
There's
snow on the mountain and the weatherman is promising more on the way for
the next few days. White Pine is getting things ready to open as soon after
November 19th as the snow and weather conditions allow. Work continues
on the Day Lodge, and facilities and services will be up and running as
soon as they are completed. Cafeteria-style food service and restrooms
will be available. White Pine's web site, www.whitepineski.com, will be
up shortly. Ski passes are available at the Ski Shop located on the west
end of Pinedale, 307-367-7222. Call 307-367-6606 for recorded ski information.
