Fire Information:Over the past 24 hours, the Cow Camp fire has not increased in size
from the 315 acres reported on Sunday, despite high winds. The crew of
36 firefighters is working to protect a 12' x 12' outfitter cabin located
near the fire. Two more 20-man crews are due in sometime today from the
Pacific Northwest. Crews are driving or flying into the fire and based
out of a spike camp near the fire.
Efforts are to work on the southeast flank to prevent
any possible movement towards Irish Canyon and Big Sandy Resort. At present,
the fire is still outside the Bridger Wilderness boundary. The fire has
now approached several wet meadows and streams, which has the crews estimating
a possible containment in 5 days. Ground crews are being supported by
the Interagency helicopter for the Forest, based out of the Jackson Hole
        Airport.
The 40 additional firefighters have been traveling two
days from Washington. Their home unit altitude is roughly 4,000 feet.
The altitude of the Cow Camp fire is around 9,600 feet. Special attention
will be paid to the firefighters health and safety as they acclimate to
        the altitude change.
The Cow Camp fire was detected Saturday morning and
has been determined to have been caused by lightning. The fire is presently
a low ground fire, creeping and smoldering in lodgepole pine, Englemann
spruce and subalpine fir. For those of you who hunt elk in that area and
are wondering if it is all burned up now, the description we got from
the Ranger was the burn is about "80-100 acres of actual black and
200 acres of spotty burn." No trail or roads have been closed due
to this fire. No fire restrictions are in effect on National Forest lands,
but visitors are reminded that campfires are not allowed above timberline
        in the wilderness.

        at a GlanceOne fire,
the Cow Camp Fire, is currently burning in the Wind River Range of the
Pinedale Ranger District in the Bridger-Teton National Forest near the
wilderness. The fire is approximately 1.5 miles south of Wolf Lake just
outside the Bridger Wilderness boundary. Fire size remains at approx.
315 acres as of Monday morning. An outfitter's cabin is being protected.
        No closures are in effect.
      New fires
have appeared in Wyoming and Montana since yesterday. Smoke from a fire
on the Wind River Indian Reservation on the east side of the Continental
Divide is visible from our area and the column has been confused with
        being on our side.
      Another
small lightning-caused fire began yesterday over on the Grey's River area
which pulled the helicopter away from the Cow Camp fire for a short time
today. Firefighting resources are still very limited.   National
