Pinedale Glaciers play WAHL home tourney
by Craig Sheppard
November 21, 2005

(Pinedale) The Pinedale high school age hockey team opened Wyoming Amateur Hockey League (WAHL) action at home against Jackson and Gillette. The other two teams had three or more games under their belts, while Pinedale was playing their first games of the year.

Pinedale came out tentative against Jackson in their first game. This was to be expected for they were just getting used to their new line mates and defensive partners. The first period of the Jackson game was the only period where they would get outscored the entire weekend. Jackson scored first, but Pinedale’s Nate Olsen tied up the game in the second period, assisted by Michael McDaniel. Jackson wasn’t about to let Pinedale back in the game, and they scored to start the third period to go ahead by one goal again.

Undaunted, Pinedale’s Michael McDaniel took a pass from Lincoln Proud and slammed a slapshot past the Jackson goalie to tie the game up. Both goalies shut the door at that point and the game ended in a 2-2 tie. The game was virtually played full strength by both teams with Jackson having to kill off one penalty and Pinedale having to kill off three. However Pinedale had to play a player short the last two minutes of the game. Emily Elder, playing for Pinedale at defense, caught up to a Jackson skater and prevented him from going in one on none on our goalie and took a “good penalty “ of tripping to keep the game tied. This did make for a very exciting finish. John Stach, goalie for Pinedale, made 24 saves for the tie, while the Jackson goalie had to make 29 saves.

Later that afternoon, after the power outage, Pinedale took on a big Gillette team. This game was going to be a big defensive struggle with no one scoring in the first period. Jeremy Silvey started the scoring off with a goal, assisted by John Colton, in the second period to put the Glaciers up by one. Half way through the final period, Pinedale scored again. This time Drew Guenthner tipped the puck up and over the goalie and into the net, assisted by Emily Elder and Preston Schwab, for the eventual game-winning goal. This game really tested the Pinedale shorthanded unit. They took seven penalties to Gillette’s only three. However they killed off all seven penalties. John Stach in goal had a shutout going until the last three seconds of the game when Gillette pulled their goalie and bounced a puck off of one of the Pinedale’s players skates to break the shutout. John once again had a great game making 21 saves on his way to the win. The Gillette goalie made 22 saves in their losing effort. Pinedale won 2-1.

The Pinedale team played well this weekend, earning three of four possible points, and are looking forward to 14 more games in the WAHL. Two makeup games with Casper will be played here sometime in January and then three games Feb. 4-5 will be played back here in Pinedale against Cheyenne, Riverton and Jackson. Come out and watch this exciting action when the Pinedale Glaciers are back in town.

Other scores here in Pinedale were Jackson 4 – Casper 0 Friday night. Gillette 4 – Casper 2 Saturday morning, and Jackson 5 – Gillette 1 Saturday night. The Pinedale Pee Wees also beat the Riverton Pee Wees in afternoon action.

Playing for the Pinedale Glacier’s last weekend on offense were: Joe Pearce (Captain), Nate Olsen (Alternate Captain), Jake Hunt (Alternate Captain), Drew Guenthner, Preston Schwab, Michael McDaniel, Shane Underwood, Forrest Michnevich, and Conor Raney. Playing both offense and defense was Jeremy Silvey, while the rest of the defense corps was made up of Emily Elder, Kathryn Konicek, John Colton and Lincoln Proud. Goalies for this weekend were John Stach and Chris Manning.

The Midget/HS age hockey team is coached by Craig Sheppard, Larry Proud and TJ Hunt.

Their next games will be December 10-11 in Cheyenne against Sheridan, Cheyenne and Casper.
