Wardell Buffalo Trap Dig Pinedale BLM archaeologists and volunteers spent a good part of last summer digging at the Wardell Buffalo Trap near Big Piney. Triple Peak Fire Flames from the night-time glow of the early October Triple Peak Fire in the Wyoming Range could be seen as far away as Pinedale and Big Piney.

A wildfire in early October caught just about everyone off guard. The nighttime flames from the Triple Peak Fire in the Wyoming Range could be seen as far away as Big Piney and Pinedale, with many residents calling in the blaze believing it was much closer than it was.

The BLM’s second excavation of the Wardell Buffalo Trap near Big Piney was kept secret for months to keep artifact hunters from looting the site. The trap is of immense historical significance in adding to the understanding of the survival and hunting methods of the prehistoric inhabitants of the Upper Green River Valley.
