Something for everyone to chase away the winter blues!
February 20, 2006
The 2006 Green River Valley Winter Carnival was held on Friday and Saturday, February 17-18 in Pinedale. This annual event was packed with a variety of creative events for all ages.
Friday evening could have been called “Wild & Crazy Night”. It started off with the “Winky Shrinker” Frozen Fishing Pond Plunge in the Kid’s Fishing Pond at the Pinedale Town Park. Four courageous souls braved the -11 degree temperatures to take a full dip in the icy pond. Two who dared were local Pinedalians, the other two were from Iowa and Wisconsin. Ages of the polar bear plungers ranged from 13-38. Plungers got a one-of-a-kind commemorative pair of boxer shorts.
The fun continued Friday night with the “Mountain Man & Woman” Arm Wrestling Tourney and the “Frostbite Princess” Drag Beauty Queen Pageant at the Corral Bar.
Saturday was kids and family day for “Kids Winter Olympics” at the American Legion Park. The kid’s events were sponsored by ExxonMobil. Events included the "Snowpack Biathlon" with Nerf Dart Guns, the “Iditakid" Dog Sled Event, Pack the Kid Up the Hill" Sled Race, "Mountain Boy & Girl" Arm Wrestling Tournament, "Eskimo Pie" Whip Cream and Bubble Gum Eating Contest, and the "Jack Frost" Frozen Money Scramble”.
Saturday afternoon, the Winter Carnival moved to the Pinedale Rodeo Grounds for the "Frozen Tundra Team Pull". Working horse teams from Wyoming, Utah and Idaho competed by pulling a sled that was gradually loaded with weight to test the pulling strength of the teams. In some competitions, teams have been able to pull up to 10,000 pounds. Locals Lenny Campbell from Bondurant and Bryon Lozier of Daniel competed in the event.
The Winter Carnival finished off on Saturday night with the "Cabin Fever Ball" at Rendezvous Pointe, sponsored by EnCana USA.The Younger Brothers Band played live music for the Ball, with many couples taking to the dance floor for a good time. Chef Wendi catered the delicious food. Kids got to test their driller and roustabout skills in the "Ice Cream Drilling Contest"! Later, the crowd enjoyed the "Most Worn, Torn, Crusty Carhartt Ensemble" at the Carhartt Fashion Show!
EnCana generously donated $5 to the Sublette County Sexual Assault and Family Violence Task Force (SAFV) for each person that attended the Cabin Fever Ball. They also matched the additional donations anyone made on their own to SAFV.
The Green River Valley Winter Carnival is organized and sponsored by the Pinedale Roundup newspaper, with the help of many volunteers.
