Bill Winney to run for US House of Representatives
Makes formal announcement from Sublette County

Bill Winney formally announced his intention to run for Republican Wyoming Representative in the U.S. House of Representatives. He made the announcement from Sublette County on Thursday, April 27th, stating, "Since I have been a resident of Sublette County since 1978, I feel it appropriate to announce in Sublette County first."
Winney owns property in Sublette County and maintains a residence in Cheyenne. He made his intentions known earlier at the Sublette County GOP Convention.
Winney, 56, a retired U.S. Navy captain, will challenge incumbent Barbara Cubin in the fall primary. He has not held or run for political office before.
Winney served 30 years of active duty with the U.S. Navy and was Commanding Officer of the USS Benjamin Franklin nuclear missile submarine and USS Holland, a nuclear submarine maintenance and repair ship. He retired in 2002.
"Wyoming has enormous energy reserves. It is incumbent on us to ensure these are developed effectively," said Winney in a press release. "At the same time protection of our beautiful land is just as important. The world’s appetite for energy will only increase. We must develop these reserves and professional structure to ensure a sustainable long-term economy in Wyoming."
According to his resume, Winney’s educational background is in engineering management, oceanography and nuclear power school and nuclear propulsion training. He has held several appointments at the Pentagon during his military career.
Winney has a wife, Louise, who is an educator specializing in Reading Education, and three sons. One son graduated from the University of Wyoming and another currently is a student there. His third son is on active duty in the US Marine Corps.
In January, Teton County Democrat Gary Trauner announced he would seek Barbara Cubin's seat. Cubin has indicated she will run for a seventh term.
