Jim Creek Fire putting out more smoke
Sept. 6 Update
September 6, 2006

Pinedale and Upper Green River Valley residents saw and smelled more smoke Tuesday evening and Wednesday as a result of the Jim Creek fire making a run down a ridge. North winds picked up around 6:00 pm Tuesday causing the fire to spread quickly on the west side of Kendall Mountain, according to fire managers.

The fire is still within the Management Action Points and is no immediate threat to structures, according to the 9:30 am Wednesday morning fire update. The Jim Creek fire is burning in the Bridger Wilderness and is being used as a wildfire for resource benefit.

There is a 8-person fuels crew, two engines, 6-person squad, two fire-use monitors and two fire managers assigned and currently working the Jim Creek fire. Two Type 3 helicopters will be available and also helping with the fire today (Wednesday). Crews are taking appropriate action to secure the management action points that are already in place. They are installing pumps and hoselays and will be utilizing bucket drops from helicopters.

Fire managers have ordered a strike team of engines, two 20-person crews and, depending on availability, a Type 1 helitanker. The fire will be flown Wednesday morning to check the status and determine growth.

The fire was started by lightning on June 26th, and is burning approximately 24 miles north of Pinedale in the Wind River Mountains. It is 2,500 acres in size, 0% contained (being allowed to burn).

The fire is putting up a little more smoke as it moves into a more exposed aspect and makes short-range runs backing into the main burn, according to the latest fire update on Inciweb.

The Pot Creek Roads #714 and 713, as well as the Boulder Basin roads, have been closed to the public for safety. Jim Creek Roads 710 & 711 are also closed. Hunters and hikers are urged to use caution when in the area.

Fire danger on the Bridger-Teton National Forest is VERY HIGH. Fire restrictions are in effect. Campfires are allowed in developed campgrounds only.

We’ll post more information as it comes available. Locals can tune in to KPIN 101.1 FM Pinedale News Radio to hear fire update broadcasts. The fire is being managed through the Pinedale Ranger District of the Bridger-Teton National Forest, 307-367-4326. Fire Information Officer is Nan Stinson, 307-260-7535 or 307-367-5735.
