“The Wyoming BLM Western Zone encompasses the Rock Springs, Kemmerer, and Pinedale Field Offices within southwestern Wyoming. We provide initial attack fire suppression on more than nine million acres of public land. We also provide support to local cooperators to an additional three million acres of private and state lands within our area. We average 90 initial attack fires a year locally, which is the highest of any BLM Fire Program within the State of Wyoming,” said George Aitchison, Fire Operations Supervisor for BLM’s Western Wyoming Fire Zone.
“We also have an aggressive Prescribed Fire Program which historically leads Wyoming in acres burned/treated each year. Our projects have incorporated the use helitorch, terra torch, and hand ignition operations to successfully and safely accomplish landscape treatments for the BLM field offices. It is not uncommon for the Western Zone staff to be assigned outside the area to assist other agencies in accomplishing their projects,” Aitchison added. This in turn, allows the Western Zone Fire Program to broaden the experience and knowledge of its personnel.
The Western Zone offers Fire Program employees government housing in the Rock Springs BLM complex at a minimal cost. This facility includes sleeping quarters, kitchen facilities, dinning room, showers, and a common room.
