June is Wyoming Bike Month
Bike to Work Week June 17-23
by Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT)
June 1, 2007
Gov. Dave Freudenthal has proclaimed June as Wyoming Bike Month, and WYDOT and other organizations are planning a variety of bicycling activities across the state, including Bike to Work Week, June 17-23. Health-care providers, recreation centers, bike clubs and other businesses and groups will be sharing educational materials with their members and employees to instruct them on how to be safe bicyclists. Special events in various communities will promote safe bike handling skills and techniques and how to share the road with motorized vehicles. WYDOT encourages Wyoming residents to try biking to work this month to save money, reduce vehicle emissions and improve their health. Bicycling 15 minutes burns about 100 calories, so cycling 30 minutes a day to and from work would burn about 1,000 calories. This year's goal for Wyoming Bike Month is to have more participants and more miles biked to work during Bike to Work Week than any previous year. WYDOT and many other employers will be participating in a bike to work challenge again this year, and the department is providing incentives to participating communities. Register your Bike to Work Week group or business with the statewide Bike Month Coordinator Jay Meyer at 307-777-4719, and then see if your group can get more participants than WYDOT during Bike to Work Week. Watch for these coming educational topics during the coming months: Share the road - June 3-9 Rules of the road for cyclists and motorists - June 10-16 Bike commuting fun and fitness - June 17-23 Bike to Work Day - Wednesday, June 21 Helmets are awesome! - June 24-30
