No fireworks allowed in Sublette County

Because of some confusion about what is and isn’t allowed regarding fireworks in the county, based on the new Resolution 07-995C that was signed by the Sublette County Commissioners on July 3rd, the Commissioners will put the topic back on their agenda for their meeting on Tuesday, July 17th to clarify the wording.
Sublette County has had a total ban on all fireworks since 1988. Every year, around the 4th of July, the public is reminded that all fireworks are prohibited everywhere in the county. The new resolution caused some people to be confused that fireworks are now being allowed in developed areas, such as driveways, large parking lots (Faler’s, the schools).
The new resolution states “Discharge of fireworks and all outdoor fires are prohibited in unimproved areas, except as provided below…” While the exceptions do not specifically mention fireworks, the wording that fireworks are prohibited in unimproved areas has led some people to question if they are now allowed in improved areas with large clearings greater than ten feet in radius. The resolution was signed to timed to go into effect in conjunction with the Forest Service institution of Stage I fire restrictions on federal land on the Bridger-Teton National Forest. Fireworks are prohibited year round on National Forest land.
Sublette County Commissioner Bill Cramer told us, “…it was certainly not the intent to create or allow for any confusion about the fire ban or the fireworks ban.” He added, “…there is a county-wide ban on the manufacture, sale, possession or use of fireworks.”
The ban does not include the official fireworks displays by the towns of Pinedale, Big Piney and Marbleton which are put on by the local fire departments.
