Courtney Skinner gives Antarctica talk
by Dawn Ballou, Pinedale Online!
January 15, 2008
Courtney Skinner gave a slide-show presentation at the Southwest Sublette County Pioneer’s Senior Center in Marbleton on Tuesday, January 15th, about his experiences in Antarctica in the early 1960s researching penguins. The program, entitled “Do Penguins Have Square Eyes?”, was sponsored by the Senior Center and Wyoming Wildlife Consultants LLC. Two Adelie penguins that Skinner brought back from his expeditions are on display at the Big Piney Library.
Courtney never did directly answer the question about whether or not penguins have square eyes, simply showing the audience tantalizing photos that weren’t quite detailed enough to give a close-up of the eyes to be able to tell. Even the two stuffed penguins on display at the presentation were of no help in answering the question, although a number of people examined their eyes up close to see, until they realized the real eyes had been replaced with glass ones in the taxidermy process. The answer is still a mystery!
