January 31, 2008
The 2008 International Pedigree Stage Stop Sled Dog Race (IPSSSDR) took place from January 25th until February 2nd. The race begins in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and ends in Park City, Utah. Host-towns are Lander, Pinedale, Big Piney, Marbleton, Kemmerer, Diamondville, Evanston, Lyman, Mountain View, Alpine and Park City, Utah.
The Pinedale Stage was held on Monday, January 28th and the Big Piney/Marbleton Stage was held on Tuesday, January 29th.
Pinedale stage started in the parking lot of the Green River Lakes. Mushers head into Pinedale along the Continental Divide Trail. The Finish line was at the American Legion Park. Teams were supposed to arrive by 11:30 AM and finishing by 1:30 PM. However, this year a fierce Wyoming blizzard hit during the beginning of the race with 60 mile per hour winds and white out conditions. Race officials called the race off after it was determined to be too dangerous for mushers, dogs, spectators and support personnel to continue. The race was halted at the Bootjack Ranch on Hwy 352, with only 18 miles of the 35 mile course completed.
Big Piney and Marbleton hosted a Dutch Oven Pot Luck Supper and "Let your K9 Shine" Dog Show at the Marbleton Senior Center on Monday night for their musher reception. Jackson band, "Global Review" provided live jazz music entertainment. The band travels with the IPSSSDR to each host town for live entertainment at the receptions.
The IPSSSDR is the largest sled dog race in the lower 48 states. It was founded in 1996 by Frank Teasley to make sled dog racing more accessible to the public.
