East I-80 to remain closed until Tuesday morning
Crashes close interstate between Laramie and Rawlins

March 31, 2008
WYDOT Update Monday, March 31, 4:15 PM: Interstate 80 in both directions between Laramie and Rawlins will remain closed until Tuesday morning as a result of an intense spring storm and a series of crashes involving at least 25 vehicles east of Walcott Junction Monday. WYDOT is recommending traffic in both directions travel north through Casper as an alternate route around the closed section. Westbound traffic should exit I-80 in Cheyenne and take I-25 north to Casper, and then WYO 220 and US 287 south to Rawlins. Eastbound traffic should take the same route in reverse. However, WYDOT District Maintenance Engineer Tim McGary said weather conditions were beginning to deteriorate in the Casper area and west of Rawlins, so further closures could be necessary Monday night. Before the westbound lanes can be reopened WYDOT maintenance crews will have to repair damage to the pavement as a result of truck fire following one of the crashes. Heat from the flames burning a truck hauling electronic equipment damaged the pavement, but McGary said the repairs can be made by Tuesday morning if weather permits. No injuries have been reported as a result of the crashes. ROAD CLOSURE ON INTERSTATE 80
Cheyenne – Interstate 80 between Rawlins and Laramie, both directions, will be closed until sometime tomorrow morning, April 1, 2008. It is closed due to multiple crashes in both directions, road surface damage due to a truck fire and severe weather conditions. We are working at this time to get all stranded traffic off of I-80 in the vicinity of the crashes. An alternate route for eastbound traffic is from Rawlins to Casper on US-287 and WY-220 and then to Cheyenne via I-25. For west bound traffic from Cheyenne the alternate route will be to take I-25 to Casper and then take WY-220 and US-287 to Rawlins. The alternate route is dependent on weather conditions.
Westbound Interstate 70 in Colorado remains closed at this due to a 70 car multi-vehicle crash in the Vail Pass area.
