Kendra Williams of Pinedale High School and Gregory Eiden Jr. of Big Piney High School earned a 2008 EnCana High School Scholarship for outstanding academic achievement, strong commitment to the community and determination to pursue a career in the oil and gas industry. Williams and Eiden will each receive $2,500 annually for up to four years totaling $10,000 for their college education.
EnCana scholarships are awarded annually to one graduating student in school districts within EnCana’s operating areas. The students must pursue a degree in engineering, geology or geophysics, or at a technical or trade program associated with the oil and gas industry, such as production technology, heavy equipment operator or land administration.
Williams plans to study Petroleum Engineering at the University of Wyoming. She is involved in 4-H, Girls State and competes in swimming, basketball and track for her school. A National Honor Society member and four-time Honor Roll student, Williams has also received many state and national awards for her science projects.
When she’s not busy with school projects and activities, Williams tutors Math to 4th and 5th graders, teaches swimming to youngsters and is a student aide to special needs children at Pinedale Middle School.
“After college, I hope to work for an oil and gas company and use my knowledge in the application of science and engineering principles to improve the methods of extracting natural gas,” said Williams. “By becoming a petroleum engineer, I will be able to make a difference in the well-being of our water, air and land resources.”
Eiden plans to attend Idaho State University and major in Mechanical Engineering. He is a member of the National Honor Society and has been an Honor Roll student all four years of high school. Eiden is not only dedicated to academics, but also to athletics. He participated on the Big Piney High School football and basketball teams. In his spare time, he organizes food drives and is a companion at the Senior Citizen Center.
“I want to enter the engineering field because I like numbers,” said Eiden. “ I also like to come up with new, innovative ideas, and challenge myself to think creatively.”
“One of EnCana’s goals is to give high school students the opportunity and resources to continue their education,” said Chris House, EnCana production coordinator. “These scholarships provide a great way to learn about the industry and maintain a strong, skilled workforce in Wyoming.”
The scholarship is awarded directly to the student, and can be used for any college-related financial need, including tuition and fees, textbooks, and rent. EnCana awarded seven scholarships across Wyoming this year.
