Winter Weather Advisory
December 18, 2008
The National Weather Service in Riverton has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for snow and wind which is in effect from 11 pm this evening to 11 pm Friday.
The advisory is for: Salt and Wyoming Ranges Wind River Mountains West Wind River Mountains East Teton and Gros Ventre Mountains Jackson Hole
Significant snowfall will develop over western Wyoming late tonight as another strong Gulf of Alaska storm system tracks slowly through the central and northern Rockies. Light snow or flurries are expected to develop as the evening wears on with steadier snow developing around midnight and increasing towards morning. Steady snow is expected during the day Friday with a burst of heavier snow possible as the cold front moves through late Friday morning where snowfall rates around an inch per hour are possible. South winds of 20 to 30 mph are expected ahead of the cold front with gusty west winds after frontal passage Friday afternoon causing areas of blowing and drifting snow. Total snowfall amounts of 6 to 12 inches are expected by later Friday evening.
Significant snowfall will continue over western Wyoming Friday through Friday evening. Storm total accumulations for western Wyoming by late Friday evening will range from 6 to 14 inches in the mountains and from 3 to 7 inches in the valleys.
Another arctic blast of cold air and light snow is expected to move south across western and central Wyoming Friday night and Saturday. Similar to last week with bitter cold temperatures remaining through Sunday. Snow will return to the western mountains Sunday night and spread east through Tuesday.
Travel around the Salt and Wyoming ranges may become hazardous by Friday due to increasing wind, snowfall and slippery travel. Total snowfall amounts of 6 to 10 inches are expected over the west side of the Wind River Range and Togwotee pass by later Friday evening with 3 to 5 inches over South Pass. Travel over Togwotee and South Passes may become hazardous by Friday due to increasing wind, snowfall, slippery travel and sharply reduced visibility at times.
A winter weather advisory means that periods of snow, sleet, or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities...and use caution while driving. Check the latest road conditions by dialing 511.
