WY SW District Music Festival in Pinedale April 15-17
Over 1000 students from eight schools coming to Pinedale
by Sublette County School District #1
April 9, 2009
Starting Wednesday night, April 15th, at 5:00 PM over a thousand music students from Southwest Wyoming’s high schools will descend on Pinedale to show off their musical skills both in large groups and in solos and small ensembles.
The instrumental performances will be held in the Pinedale Middle School gymnasium and the vocal events will held in the Pinedale auditorium.
All of these events are open to the public and free of charge. All that is asked is that people do not enter during the performances.
Starting the festival out Wednesday night will be the Pinedale High School Concert Band performing for their judges at 5:30 PM at the middle school gym, followed by the Pinedale High School Concert Choir at 6:30 PM in the auditorium. Then the Pinedale Jazz Band will perform in the middle school gym at 7:30 PM followed by the Pinedale Jazz Choir at 8:30 PM in the auditorium.
The next day, Thursday April 16th, will see the remaining large groups from the district performing in their respective venues from 8:00 AM until 5:30P M. There will be concert choirs, jazz choirs, madrigal groups, girls’ choirs, concert bands, jazz bands, guitar ensembles, orchestras and even a blue grass band performing on half hour intervals throughout the day.
Each large group will perform for two judges and receive ratings, critiques and a 30-minute clinic from one of their adjudicators. Adjudicators for the choirs will be Delores Howell, a music teacher from Casper and a former music teacher in Pinedale, Mike Masterson, a professor from Northwest College and Heather Blackwell, a music teacher from Evanston. Judges for the instrumental groups will be Neil Hansen, a professor of music from Northwest College and a former music teacher in Big Piney, Craig Olson, also a professor from Northwest College and a former very successful middle school band director in California and Nick Simons, a music teacher from Cheyenne and a former musical director to the Casper Troopers. Also helping out will be our very own Chandra Stough who will be judging the string solos and ensembles on Friday.
All day Friday the judges will break up into various rooms and judge the individual students performing solos and small ensembles. The band students will be in the middle school again and the vocal students will be in different classrooms in the auditorium building. The string solos and ensembles will be performing in the auditorium Friday morning only. Especially interesting Friday will be the percussion groups from Riverton who will be performing in the middle school gym from 10:00 AM until the end of the day.
Students will be representing schools from Riverton, Lyman, Mt. View, Kemmerer, Cokeville, Star Valley, Jackson, Big Piney and Pinedale.
This event only comes to Pinedale once every eight years, so come out and check out the fantastic musical talent being produced from our own part of the state.
