Special guest speaker William Bauer explores the interaction between American Indians and overland migrants during the mid-1800s at a program on Thursday, May 14th, at the Green River Valley Museum in Big Piney. Bauer's talk, "Buying, Selling and Trading in Indian Country: American Indians, Overland Migrants, and Economic Borders of the Overland Trail," is presented by the Wyoming Humanities Council and sponsored by the Green River Valley Museum.
The free event begins at 7:00 PM at the Green River Valley Museum. The general public is invited.
Between 1840 and 1870, nearly 500,000 Americans traveled from Missouri to the Pacific Coast, passing through Indian Country along the way. Myth and popular culture often overlooks the economic interactions between American Indians and Overland migrants. By closely examining and discussing Pawnee, Shoshone, Ute and Bannock interactions with Overland migrants, Bauer will offer new understanding of the different economies of the Great Plains as well as how American Tribal nations viewed American overland migrants in the mid-19th century.
Bauer holds master's and doctorate degrees from the University of Oklahoma and has published numerous articles in scholarly journals and books. He currently teaches American Indian History and Ethnohistory at the University of Wyoming. He lives in Laramie. Bauer's presentation is offered by the Wyoming Council for the Humanities through its 2009 Humanities Forum. Council programs explore the human experience-our lives, our communities, our world—in partnership with nonprofit organizations throughout Wyoming. Emphasis is placed on fostering forums for discussion among Wyoming residents.

Editor’s Note: The Green River Valley Museum will be open on Friday, May 22. They will then be closed for the Memorial Day weekend and will reopen for the summer season on Tuesday, May 26th.
