Dig It! How to be a Smart Plant Shopper

Know your Garden - Know whether your soil is alkaline or acid, clay or loam, has sunny areas or shady areas. Use the internet to make a list of plants that do well in your conditions and use this list as your starting point at the garden center.

Look at Foliage - Plants should have firm, healthy-looking leaves. Do not buy plants with wilted, pale, curled, black or brown foliage.

Look at Roots - Carefully push a plant out of its pot to examine the root system. Roots should be firm and white. If possible, don't buy rootbound plants that have roots that are coiled around the inside of the container, because the plant may be stressed; however, some plants appreciate being rootbound before they bloom, so you need to know your plants.

Read the Tag - Look at other plants with the same tag to make sure the plant isn't mislabeled.

Consider Size - You will save money by starting small and usually have the best chance of the plant surviving transplanting. However, a larger specimen may look better the day it is planted. .

Buy Plants that Aren't in Bloom - Flowering plants put energy into their beautiful blossoms. Plants that aren't blooming will be able to withstand transplant shock easier than others since they will be able to put more energy into making roots rather than sustaining blossoms.

Get Center Plants - Plants at the center of a bench tend to be watered more consistently.

Package Carefully - If temperatures are extra high or low, give plants protection during the trip home. Keep car windows rolled up or down, depending on what environment you want to sustain especially if you have stops to make on the way home.
