(Cheyenne, Wyo.) – First Lady Nancy Freudenthal is resting comfortably following surgery today (Monday, June 1) at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center. The First Lady underwent a hysterectomy to remove a uterine fibroid, a common non-cancerous tumor.
"This is one of the most common procedures for women in the United States," said Bert Wagner M.D., of Cheyenne Obstetrics & Gynecology, who is familiar with the procedure but did not perform the operation. "The full recovery time can be up to six weeks, depending on the manner in which the procedure is performed." According to the National Institutes of Health, more than 600,000 hysterectomy procedures are completed annually in the United States.
The First Lady is expected to return home in the next few days and should be able to return to work in the next few weeks.
