Bruce O. Rossmeyer
July 31, 2009
Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP) reports that Bruce O. Rossmeyer, 66, from Orman Beach, Florida, was killed on Thursday, July 30th, in an accident on WYO 28 approximately 17.8 miles east of Farson in Sweetwater County.
According to WHP, the roadway at the time of the crash was dry with clear weather conditions. There were two vehicles involved in the accident which occurred around 10:59AM. Both vehicles were eastbound on WYO 28. Rossmeyer was traveling with a group of five other motorcycles. He was driving a 2008 Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Rossmeyer was behind a vehicle driven by Robert L. VanValkenburg, age 73, of Rock Springs, Wyoming. The VanValkenburg 1988 Ford pickup which was pulling a 2-axle camper style trailer. VanValkenburg braked and used his vehicles left turn signal to indicate he was going to make a turn from WYO 28 onto a small dirt road. VanValkenburg was in the process of making his left turn when Rossmeyer attempted to pass the VanValkenburg combination on the left. Rossmeyer collided into the driver’s side door of the VanValkenburg pickup. The collision occurred near the westbound shoulder. After impact, Rossmeyer was ejected from the motorcycle and came to rest partially under the trailer near the passenger side tires. Rossmeyer was not wearing a helmet and he died at the scene. VanValkenburg was wearing a seatbelt and did not sustain any injuries.
Troopers investigating this crash have determined that the turn signals and the brake lights were in working condition on the VanValkenburg combination. It is unknown why Rossmeyer did not see the turn signal/brake lights. None of the other motorcycles in Rossmeyer’s group were involved in the crash.
