National Elk Refuge late summer visitor schedule
Will have talks on wolves, bears and elk in August & September
August 19, 2009

Below is the late summer schedule for the visitor facilities at the National Elk Refuge in Jackson.

Free public tours of the historic Miller House will continue through Labor Day weekend, with hours of operation from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm daily, including weekends. The Miller House and surrounding land was the first property purchased by the Federal government to become part of the National Elk Refuge, established in 1912. Volunteer staff will be on duty to talk about the history of the National Elk Refuge and early homesteaders who lived on the land. The historic site, located approximately ¾ mile north of the National Elk Refuge entrance on East Broadway Street in Jackson, will close for the season beginning Tuesday, September 8.

The Jackson Hole & Greater Yellowstone Visitor Center, located at 532 N. Cache Street in Jackson, will continue operating from 8:00 am through 7:00 pm daily through Sunday, September 27. The multi-agency visitor center is staffed by personnel from the National Elk Refuge, Bridger-Teton National Forest, Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce, Grand Teton Association, and Grand Teton National Park. The popular facility offers a variety of displays, videos, and interpretive talks as well as an extensive bookstore. The center also serves as a location for obtaining area maps, fishing licenses, firewood permits, bear canisters for backcountry use, and visitor service information such as lodging, dining, scenic drives, and area recreational activities.

The Visitor Center’s hours of operation will change to 9:00 am through 5:00 pm beginning Monday, September 28.

Several scheduled talks remain in the 2009 Summer Naturalist Night speaker series, offered free of charge at the Jackson Hole & Greater Yellowstone Visitor Center at 5:30 pm on the following dates:

Wolves and Wolf Management in Wyoming — Tuesday, August 25
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Wolf Biologist Mike Jimenez will discuss wolf biology, predator-prey relationships, wolf-livestock conflicts, and the current wolf population status and legal challenges.
