The National Weather Service will be conducting a Snow Spotter Training class in Pinedale on Wednesday, October 14. The training session will take place at the BLM Office, 1625 W Pine St. beginning at 6:00 p.m. The one-hour class is free of charge and open to anyone with an interest in reporting precipitation and snow amounts year round. All course materials are provided to the volunteers.

Trained observers will be asked to provide precipitation and snowfall reports in support of the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network, or CoCoRaHS. The NWS, state climatologist, and other governmental agencies utilize CoCoRaHS as a central location to obtain quality precipitation reports from trained volunteers. "The quality observations of the CoCoRaHS volunteers can help us tremendously when considering drought and flood issues, as well as snowfall patterns," said meteorologist Dan Berc of the NWS Riverton office.

The network, which originated at the Colorado Climate Center at Colorado State University, is now active in 49 states with over 15,000 volunteer observers. These trained volunteers provide daily precipitation reports using an online reporting interface.
