Fishing Report – June 11, 2010

June is usually the transition month for water flows in Sublette County, but the speed of change from low stream flows to get out of the way high water was extremely rapid.
We experienced the worst case scenario of warm temperatures and rain which created a quick melt situation. The rivers and streams flowing out of the Wyoming and Wind River Ranges are all high and currently off color and will probably stay that way for the next three weeks.
Although the stream conditions are not ideal, do not let that preclude you from getting out and trying your luck. Be cognizant of a couple of things when fishing in high water conditions, the first of which is wading safety. The current is swift and the visibility below the water surface is often limited, so it is a good idea to use a wading staff as a third point of contact when wading in these water conditions. Locating fish will be the second challenge since the high volume of water will make it difficult to find good holding areas and feeding zones. Look for pools or eddies formed by big boulders or other structure where fish can hold without expending too much energy. The fish will also tend to hold-up under deep cut banks and stay lower in the water column where there is less current force.
You might want to use a sinking line or sink tip leader to get you fly down in the water column quicker. Use bright colored cone head streamer patterns and trail them with a good size bead head nymph. Streamer patterns that should work well are woolly buggers, rubber legged belders, double bunnies and the old standby muddler minnow. The sizes for these offerings run from 2-8 depending on the volume of the water you are fishing. For nymphs, try patterns such as hare’s ear, prince, rubber legged copper and zebra johns sizes 10-16.
This is a good time to check out some of the lakes we have in the area and practice some stillwater techniques.
