Wind River bear hunt area closed
by Wyoming Game and Fish Department press release
September 14, 2010
Hunters should be advised that black bear hunting along the western front of the Wind River Range has closed for the fall season with the mortality quota recently being reached. Black Bear Hunt Area 19, which closed September 13, generally includes the west side of the Wind River Range from the upper Green River basin south to Farson. The female mortality quota for the fall season is four bears. It is the responsibility of all black bear hunters to know whether a particular hunt area has closed before hunting there. To do so, hunters are required to call the black bear mortality quota hotline at 1-800-264-1280 to learn the status of any given hunt area for the state.
Hunters are also encouraged to view the Game and Fish Department’s voluntary bear identification test on the department’s website to learn the differences between black bears and grizzly bears, for which hunting is currently not allowed. To access the tests, visit the Wyoming Game & Fish Department website at http://gf.state.wy.us/ and click on the Education tab.
Hunters harvesting a black bear are required to report the harvest to the local game warden, biologist, or regional office of the Game and Fish within 72 hours.
Black bear hunters with questions about hunting seasons or regulations should pick up a copy of the current bear hunting regulations at any license selling vendor or call the Game and Fish office nearest the black bear hunt area they intend to hunt. The Pinedale Game and Fish office toll free number is 1-800-452-9107. The Jackson Game and Fish office toll free number is 1-800-423-4113.
