Supermoon
March 19, 2011
Dave Bell has been photographing the incredible views of the full moon this week.
"What has been dubbed the "supermoon", was 95% full this evening (Thursday, March 17) as it was rising above the Wind River Mountains. It is very hazy with upper level cloud cover so a "clear" shot is just not possible--but this one works for now. An event which has not occurred for nearly twenty years, the perigee full moon is literally 14% larger and 30% brighter than lesser moons. Full moons vary in size due to the oval shape of the moons orbit. The orbit is an ellipse with one side (perigee) about 50,000 kilometers closer to the earth than the other (apogee). On Friday evening the moon will rise at 18:41. The moon will be full on Saturday setting at 06:55 and rising at 20:00."
