Mike Kaul’s Late Winter Fishing Report
From Two Rivers Emporium
by Mike Kaul, Two Rivers Emporium
April 10, 2011
It seems like we are finally getting back to what I hope will be a new cycle of decent winter snowfall here in Sublette County. I have not seen this much snow accumulation in the foothills for many years. Most of our water drainages are registering well over 100% of normal snow pack and the Wyoming Range and Wind River Mountains are showing respectable snow drifts, so we should have excellent water conditions this summer.
The conditions for fishing will depend, as usual, on spring temperatures in May and June, which will dictate the speed of the thaw and timing of the peak run-off. The way things look now, we may have high water conditions well into early July, but hopefully this will translate into good water flows in late summer and throughout the fall.
Streams in the area are starting to open-up for some serious walk/wade fishing opportunities and short floats are possibilities on the New Fork and Green. One thing for sure is that the fish will be hungry after a long winter on short rations. They may still be a little lethargic in their movement toward food, so you may have to entice them with a larger chunk of bait like a big streamer pattern. There is always some aquatic bug activity occurring in the stream, so do not hesitate to tie on your favorite nymph pattern. You may have to get down in the water column and drag it by their noses in order to have them make a move on it.
If you are planning a fishing trip in the near term, be aware there is still a lot of shore ice along most streams, so you should move cautiously along the banks. Visitors to our area should also know that most of the roads to the fishing holes are currently either covered with drifted snow or are extremely muddy. Fishers should use common sense when traversing fishing roads to avoid spending the day extracting the vehicle from a snow drift or mud hole instead of fishing.
We offer a full range of fishing opportunities again this season starting with pre-runoff excursions on the Green and New Fork Rivers beginning mid-to-late April. Individuals who have flexibility and can visit us on short notice during this time period should call and get on our pre-runoff contact list. Since weather and fishing conditions change rapidly during the early spring, we will contact the fishers within a few days of when we project a good fishing window. We offer some great still-water trips on our fine lakes in the Pinedale area. Stillwater fishing is actually the best early in the season, late May and through the month of June. Those of you who want to visit us early will have excellent fishing opportunities.
