The questions above were some of the ones asked of Pinedale Middle and High School students, ages 11-18, as part of the Wyoming Department of Education's annual Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) given on April 25th. The Youth Risk Behavior Survey "monitors six categories of priority health-risk behaviors among Wyoming youth: behaviors that contribute to unintentional and intentional injuries, tobacco use, alcohol and other drug use, sexual behaviors, unhealthy dietary behaviors, and physical inactivity."
Students and parents were informed that they were not required to take the survey and that they could opt out if they wished to do so. No names were taken on the survey and it did not affect the grade in the student’s class. Students could leave a question blank if they weren’t comfortable answering it.
The health behavior survey was developed so educators could learn more about what students do that may affect a child’s health. The Wyoming Department of Education says the information provided is used to improve health education for young people.
