This month wraps up the final D.A.R.E. safety lesson offered to the K-4th graders of our county. This month, Deputy Katherine Peterson will discuss safety rules that kids can follow, such as: always wearing a seatbelt while riding in a car, crossing at crosswalks, never playing in the street, obeying traffic rules while riding bikes, wearing helmets when riding a bike or recreational vehicles such as ATVs and dirt bikes, etc. The Big Piney 5th grade class will complete their D.A.R.E. program this month also. Their culmination ceremony will be held at the Fine Arts Building on April 3, at 10am. Parents are invited to attend.
With spring (hopefully) around the corner, bike safety is always a concern for our youth. The urge to get out on their fresh-from-storage pedal bikes seems to overpower even the most thoughtful of children. Please take some time to remind your children of some basic bicycle safety laws and practices: 1. Wear a helmet and bright colored clothing while riding. 2. Obey all traffic laws such as stop signs, stop lights, etc. 3. Ride in the same direction as traffic, even if you are on the sidewalk. 4. Watch out for automobiles coming out of driveways and parking lots. 5. Cross streets at corners. Always look both ways to make sure cars have stopped before crossing. 6. Walk your bike across busy streets. 7. Use hand signals to let automobile drivers and other bike riders know what you are going to do. 8. Only rider per bike seat! 9. If you ride at night, the law requires your bike to be equipped with a white light on the front, and red reflectors on the rear. 10. Always ride along bike paths where available.
