Road washouts inhibit traveling on Big Piney roads

The Big Piney Ranger District of the Bridger-Teton National Forest has limited the access to some of its roads due to washouts and less than ideal road conditions. It has been a prevalent occurrence this year as we are nearing the warmer months, that our roads have been either impassable or in need of temporary closures to ensure the safety of visitors and protection of natural resources.
There are three roads in the Big Piney area that have impeded vehicle access due to washouts. The Snyder Basin road #10128 has washed out at two locations. The first is right after the intersection with road #10128A which leads to the Snyder Guard Station. Access to the Snyder Guard Station and the rest of Snyder Basin can be accessed through roads #10128A and #10128B which pass through the State section of land. Road #10128 is also washed out approximately .75 miles from the top of Thomson Pass and is impassable. The road #10046, connecting Middle Piney to Snyder Basin by Coal Creek is also made impassable to full size vehicles, but can be traversed by ATV. LaBarge Creek does not have access from Snyder Basin.
These temporary road closures are necessary for the safety of Forest visitors and to avoid any further road degradation. As spring melt is still underway, travelers to these areas should expect to see some road impairment in other parts of the district and should proceed with caution.
The Forest Service works to reopen any temporary closures as soon as possible and patrollers constantly monitor road conditions to allow for public access. For additional information please contact the Big Piney Ranger District at 307-276-3375.
