Town of Pinedale update: Keep water line bleeders running

Many of us know that during the colder months, the ground freezes. This happens because water is present in the soil, and freezes once the ground temperature reaches freezing temperatures.
What may not be as well known, or understood, is that warmer air temperatures do not mean that the ground has thawed. The top layers of soil respond to warmer air temperatures by thawing, but the layers underneath will remain cold and frozen.
The thawed top soil layers, and warm air temperature causes the frozen ground to permeate more profoundly and also act as an insulator which does not allow the frozen ground to thaw. This is an important fact to remember since below ground plumbing can become frozen as well. Warmer air temperatures do not add up to warmer ground temperatures.
With that being said, it is imperative that residents continue to bleed water lines to prevent them from freezing. The Town of Pinedale recommends that there is a dedicated bleeder line in the home to prevent any plumbing fixtures, used for bleeding purposes, to unintentionally be turned off. If your plumbing does freeze, please contact a plumber, there are many in our area that offer thawing service. Thawing of lines is not a service the Town of Pinedale offers, but contact the Town if this does happens. Please call Town Hall, at (307) 367-4136.
