Fred Pflughoft has found at least five Great grey owls in the Pinedale area he has been enjoying watching and photographing. The fluffy plumage on these birds make them seem larger than they really are. They like to find a perch, watch, and hunt by listening. Their disc-shaped faces help funnel sound into their ears like a radar dish to hear prey moving around. They can often be seen taking off and flying low over open areas and plunging into snow to catch rodents more than a foot below the surface.
