Pump Boys & Dinettes writer to visit Pinedale performance, give pre-show talk

The original writer of the 1982 hit Broadway musical "Pump Boys and Dinettes" will be in attendance for the show’s January 17 Pinedale production presented by the Pinedale Fine Arts Council (PFAC) at the Pinedale Auditorium.
John Foley, who co-wrote the Tony Award winning (1981) musical, happens to be a long-time friend of Obo’s Market owners Phil and Patty Washburn from their time teaching in Chicago, Ilinois.
"The Washburns were aware of my Pump Boys life," Foley says. "When the Pinedale show was announced, Patty and Phil tracked me down and invited me out to Pinedale to get involved somehow. Now who would turn that down?!"
Foley is quick to point out the similarities between the Broadway play, which premiered in New York in 1982, and Pinedale - where it will stop for one night on a national U.S. Tour.
"Pump Boys is really a musical Valentine to small towns," Foley continues. "It takes place at a gas/station diner, which functions as the place everyone builds community. I am grateful and amazed that this show still resonates and circulates as an ode to the idea of community."
Prior to the show, Foley will give a pre-show talk about the writing of Pump Boys. That talk will be held in the PHS Choir room just adjacent to the auditorium at 6:15 pm (free).
"I’m very much looking forward to joining you for the evening in Pinedale!" Foley said.
Tickets for the Jan. 17 production of Pump Boys and Dinettes are on sale now at Office Outlets, The Cowboy Shop, Boondocks, The Big Piney Library and at the door the night of the performance. Tickets are also available online at pinedalefinearts.com.
