Archaeology talk in Pinedale Jan. 15
Fur trade era spear point found in Copper Mountains in central Wyoming
January 9, 2019
The Upper Green River Basin Chapter of the Wyoming Archeology Society (WAS) will be having a meeting next Tuesday, January 15th, at 6:30 pm at the Museum of the Mountain Man in Pinedale. There will be a short business meeting followed by a presentation by BLM Archaeologist Gina Clingerman. Everyone is welcome. Please invite your friends. Her presentation will be "A Rare Find in the Copper Mountains." In 2015, Gina Clingerman was working as an Abandoned Mine Land Archaeologist for the Bureau of Land Management. She found a fur trade era spear point in the Copper Mountains in central Wyoming. The rare artifact featured a maker's mark that could be traced back to the cutlery industry in Sheffield, England. This presentation pieces together the history of the 'Maltese Cross L' maker's mark, a brief history of the Fur Trade Era in North America and Wyoming, and how this unlikely artifact may have made its way into the Copper Mountains.
Gina Clingerman attended the University of Wyoming obtaining a Bachelor's Degree in English and Anthropology. She has worked as a professional archaeologist for the last 16 years. In 2010 she moved to Lander, Wyoming to work as the Abandoned Mine Lands archaeologist for BLM Wyoming. Membership Reminder: Dues for 2019 membership are due by the end of March.
