Cruisin May 1st for McKenzie Meningitis Foundation
April 30, 2020

Everyone is invited to go Cruisin’ on Friday, May 1st in support of the McKenzie Meningitis Foundation. Usually, supporters hold a volleyball tournament each spring as a fundraiser for the Foundation, but that was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. One of the events that is being allowed, and has been very fun and successful for alternative fundraisers for cancelled events, is cruisin Main Street in Pinedale.

Friday’s event will be from 6-8PM down Pine Street in Pinedale. There will be cotton candy for sale. The Great Outdoor Shop and Two Rivers will also be open during that time and will donate 10% of their sales towards the cause. Swing by the old Town Hall lot on Pine Street between 7 and 8PM on Friday for bags of cotton candy. Thank you to the Wind River Masters 4-H Club for their community service bagging and selling the 200 bags for Mckenzie Meningitis Foundation cruising fundraiser.

The McKenzie Meningitis Foundation is a nonprofit corporation for charitable, medical, educational and scientific purposes dedicated to public awareness of a vaccine-preventable disease. The foundation was created in honor of McKenzie Carter Hartwig, who graduated from Pinedale High School in 2001. In August, 2001, while attending a volleyball tournament in North Dakota with her college teammates, she suddenly became ill and died that same evening. She died of meningococcal meningitis, a bacterial infection that causes inflammation of the spinal cord and brain. This is a vaccine-preventable disease. McKenzie’s family and friends created the foundation in her name in order to create more public awareness of the disease, and to purchase vaccines for youth in Sublette County.

Each year, The McKenzie Meningitis Foundation purchases vaccine for both Pinedale and Big Piney seniors to get vaccinated. This year it was around 400 doses at a cost of almost $40,000. MMF's objective is to educate those individuals most susceptible to meningitis. To provide funds for those who cannot afford to participate in the state vaccination program, or who are outside the age eligibility, but are still at risk. Their main goal is to maintain the foundation’s endowment and continue educational efforts in Wyoming, while expanding them to other states.

David J. Bell and Peggy Bell have donated a beautiful photo to help with the cause. It is an 18x32 print showing a lightning storm over the town of Pinedale. Paige Harrell and Elisha Haley are selling raffle tickets for this print $5 each or 5 for $20. You can contact one of them directly to pay in person or pay via PayPal at mckenziemeningitisfoundation@gmail.com
