Museum of the Mountain Man opens May 1st for summer season

The Museum of the Mountain Man in Pinedale opens for the summer season on Saturday, May 1st. They will be open seven days a week, from 9AM to 5PM, through October. Admission is $10 for adults (age 13 and over), $8 for senior citizens, and kids 12 and under are free.
New this year in the lower gallery is a display of vintage engravings of the American Cowboy, 1867-1911, from the Lee Sullivan print collection. These wood-block engravings and half-tone prints depict the North American Cowboy, the most romanticized figure in American history, as seen by their contemporary artists. The display chronicles the march of the cowboy across the western frontier, from its origins with the vaqueros of northern Mexico, through the trail drives of the Texas longhorns to mid-western railroads, and finally to its apogee of the large free-range cattle operations of the Northern High Plains. The engravings come from the pages of Harper’s Weekly, Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper, The American Agriculturist, and European publications. Images of cowboy life are interspersed with first-person quotes and cowboy poetry.
Other displays at the Museum of the Mountain Man include Jim Bridger’s rifle, a large buffalo hide tipi, and a Shoshone sheep-horn bow. The Museum also has a children’s play area, a short video about mountain men, and gift shop inside. Outside are displays about the settlement era including several original log cabins, a restored sheep wagon, and a display about Campfire Girls.
The Museum of the Mountain Man has several big events planned for the upcoming season, starting with Living History Days May 11-13. School children from around western Wyoming will come to spend time with the American Mountain Men and learn about life trapping and trading in the Rocky Mountain fur trade era of the early 1800s. The public is welcome to attend as well during these days. There will also be a free public presentation by the Mountain Men on the evening of Wednesday, May 12th.
The American Mountain Men return July 8-11 for Green River Rendezvous. There will be 35+living history programs and many guest presenters, as well as the Museum’s annual Art & Wine auction gala fundraiser, and author presenters for the Museum’s Rocky Mountain Fur Trade Journal.
