August 12, 2022 by Sage & Snow Garden Club August 16, 2022 Sublette County gardeners are well-known for their innovative adaptations to gardening in our challenging environment. The Sage and Snow Garden Club found a great example of innovation when visiting Andrea and Jim Ennis’s gardens in the Old Brazzill Subdivision near Pinedale. Their desire to grow vegetables and flowers in the ground was thwarted by their rocky soil. So, they converted old steel dehydration tubs (8 ft. in diameter) and methane tanks (4 ft. in diameter) to garden beds to grow beautiful wildflowers. Jim cut the tanks in half, filled them with soil, and added micro bubblers on timers for irrigation. The tubs are artfully placed in their front yard atop a rocky base. Then, Andrea planted wildflower seed mixes in each tub. The flowers reseed each year to create a colorful display of blue flax; orange gaillardia; pink and red poppies; purple, red, and pink penstemon; white yarrow; and white and yellow columbine. They are vegetable gardeners, as well, and grow spinach and lettuce in a large rectangular steel tub. A raised bed in the back yard is filled with bush beans, garlic, and carrots. Peppers and tomatoes thrive in large grow bags on wagons to make it easy to haul those heat lovers in and out of the garage. Andrea and Jim have created a beautiful and practical gardening space free of weeds and safe from critters. |
