FARMINGTON, UTAH - Ruth Helen Logan Evans (Helen) passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday, August 22, 2022, in Farmington, Utah, at 88 years old.
Helen was born on August 29, 1933, in Reliance, Wyoming, to Harry Seymour Logan and Ruth Florence Hecox. Helen was the middle child born to Harry and Ruth. After her parent’s divorce, Helen gained another two siblings. From an early age, Helen proved to be a firm mind, determined, and capable of almost anything. Helen attended and graduated from Pinedale High School in Pinedale, Wyoming. There, the young basketball star caught her attention—and there was no going back. At a girl-ask-guy Halloween dance, she built up the courage to ask him if he would like to go to the dance—that’s right, she made the first move. He said yes. Together Helen and William Richard Evans (Dick) piled into the truck and danced away the rest of the night. Dick and Helen often enjoyed dancing; that Halloween night was only the first of many to come.
On December 15, 1951, Helen married Dick, her newly appointed naval officer, in San Diego, California. After the Korean War, they returned to their beloved Wyoming to settle and continue to grow their family. Helen and Dick enjoyed spending time in the great outdoors of the continental divide. Helen’s favorite moments were those spent roaming, hiking, and climbing the extraordinary Wind River Mountain Range. She was full of life and always ready for a new challenge.
Those working with the hay crew each summer grew to love this wonderful couple. Dick would teach the value of arduous work during the day only to hurry to the Evans’ residence where Helen’s delicious homemade meals awaited them. She was an excellent cook. Her freshly cracked wheat cereal and bread were a treat to all. This bread was also a tool for serving others. Helen was never afraid to get her hands dirty; she worked tirelessly to support her family and all around her. Helen was an active and faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She loved the Lord and the gospel of Jesus Christ. She was a strong leader, minister, and above all, teacher to those around her. While her cooking was delicious, nothing compared to the sweet nightly gospel discussions with the hay crew and her family.
Each grandchild eagerly waited for the day they would turn eight years old to spend a part of their summer with grandma and grandpa. This was the time designated for grandma and grandpa to teach them etiquette, sewing, driving, welding, and other life lessons. It was a time when each child knew of their importance in this world and the love their grandparents had for them. This was also the time for each to learn about their heritage, family history, and much more. She enjoyed spending time with family, serving those in her community, actively participating in church activities, and perhaps one of the most memorable, the softly tickling of her grandchildren’s arms as they fell asleep.
Helen was insightful, determined, intelligent, and thoughtful. Of all things Helen did in her life, the greatest is the legacy she left behind. Her example, love, and kindness have been instilled in all that knew her. She was a woman who loved God, family, and her fellow man. We will miss the late-night talks, the reading of books, life lessons, and other tender experiences which were always had with Helen. We love her more than words can express and miss her greatly. We know she is at peace and can finally rest with her husband from a lifetime of service.
Helen is survived by her two stepsiblings, Ron Wilson (Cynde) of Pinedale, Wyoming and Wendy (Art) of Wickenburg, Arizona, her five children Paul (Tammy) of LaBarge, Wyoming, Treva (John) of Gillette, Wyoming, Richard (Denise) of Farmington, Utah, and son David Logan (Maely) of Bloomington, Utah, and DeeAnn of Layton, Utah. Her survivors include her 17 grandchildren and many beautiful great-grandchildren, with more to come.
She is preceded in death by her parents, siblings Myrtle Jensen and Mildred Delgado, loving husband and high school sweetheart William Richard Evans (Dick), and precious granddaughter Kimberly Ann Evans.
Memorial services will be held on Friday, September 30, 2022, at 3:00 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, found at 549 South 1525 West, Farmington, Utah 84025.
