Saturday U returns Sept. 23

The University of Wyoming (UW), Sublette BOCES, and Sublette County Libraries present another session of Saturday University, Saturday U, on Friday, September 23, at 6:30PM in the Lovatt Room of the Pinedale Library. This free Saturday U session highlights faculty research in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Wyoming. Doors open at 6:00 PM for a free light dinner and snacks.

6:30 PM: "A Plot in Steady Stitches: Handmade Items as Storytellers"
Nanc Small, Ph.D,
Associate Professor of English, UW
Dr. Small demonstrates a proposed method of examining heritage artifacts for stories of the people who made them. Through this method, makers are again made visible so that we might know them as fuller humans rather than as limited instruments of production.
7:30 PM: "Global Ghosts: Historical Archaeology at Carbon City, Wyoming"
Alexandra Kelly, Ph.D, Associate Professor of History and Archeology, UW
Dr. Kelly discusses recent archaeological and archival research at Carbon City. Carbon was established in 1868 and was the first coal mining town along the Union Pacific Railroad in Wyoming. She explores the significance of Carbon to larger histories of labor migration, industrial capitalism, and frontier heritage in the American West.
8:30 PM: "Kill the Wabbit: The Intersection of Classical Music and Popular Entertainment"
Michael Griffith, Ph.D, Professor of Music, UW
Dr. Griffith, UW Symphony Orchestra Conductor, explores the fine line between classical music and popular culture. Using musical excerpts, he illustrates how some hit films utilize orchestral masterpieces - often with humorous results -- while some pop songs are based on 19th-century orchestral themes.
