Memorial Day is to Remember the Fallen; those who gave their lives for us. Those who made the ultimate sacrifice so that we may remain free.
Three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, the head of an organization of Union veterans — the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) — established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared it should be May 30.
It is now a federal holiday that occurs on the last Monday in May.
I have noticed in recent years that Memorial Day has become the long weekend for many - some have forgotten why this day was set-aside. For them, it is a day of sales, promotions, picnics, BBQ's and recreation.
It is much more than that. It is a day to show our gratitude to those that gave their lives for all of us and remember them.
The activities in Pinedale will be the following on May 27: 10:00AM - American Legion Park - Ceremony, Sublette County Veterans Mounted Cavalry 11:00AM - Pinedale Cemetery - Ceremony, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), American Legion 12:00 Noon - Luncheon at VFW, all are invited to attend
