Mountain Avalanche advisory
Bridger-Teton National Forest Avalanche Center
March 5, 2007

The Bridger-Teton National Forest Avalanche Center puts out daily avalanche advisory and weather forecasts that are of great help to snowmobilers and back-country skiers.

GENERAL AVALANCHE ADVISORY

The General Avalanche Hazard is MODERATE, and could rise to CONSIDERABLE in the afternoon if clear skies prevail. Backcountry travelers could trigger surface slabs one to two feet in depth. These slabs will become more susceptible to failure as the day warms. While unlikely, layers of weak, faceted snow lurk at the mid and base levels of the snowpack, and could fail under the influence of more substantial triggers, such as snowmobiles, large groups, cornice drops or surface slabs. The consequences of triggering one of these slabs are severe. In addition, any extended periods of sunshine could weaken the snow surface and cause pinwheels, wet loose sloughs, and cornice drops. Backcountry travelers need to pay attention to the amount of heating, and adjust their plans accordingly if signs of significant warming are observed.
