Small fire in the Wyoming Range reaches 3 acres in size

We got our first wildfire of the season in the Wyoming Range on Memorial Day weekend. Bridger-Teton National Forest fire crews, along with firefighters from Pinedale and Daniel Volunteer fire departments, responded to a call of a forest fire approximately two miles past the Merna Junction in the Dry Beaver area of the Wyoming Range around 6 PM on Sunday, May 27th.

According to Justin Kaber, Assistant Fire Management Officer for the Pinedale Ranger District, the blaze reached approximately 3 acres in size, counting nearby spot fires. It was near the South Fork Beaver Road in the Wyoming Range.

Crews were able to get the blaze under control by Monday. No smoke was reported from the fire on Memorial Day. On Tuesday, May 29, crews were “cold trailing” the fire area, making sure everything was out and cold.

A total of 15 firefighters worked the fire, including Bridger-Teton National Forest fire crews and firemen from Sublette County stations.

Fire danger is currently rated LOW on the Bridger-Teton National Forest. There are no restrictions on campfires or smoking at this time. Forest users are reminded that even though fire danger is officially rated as low, it is always important to be careful with any campfires and cigarettes to prevent wildfires. “Things are dryer than normal,” Kaber said. “Hopefully we’ll get some rain in June.”

As we get closer to July 4th, we also remind parents and kids that fireworks are prohibited year-round on National Forest land and everywhere in Sublette County. The Volunteer fire departments in Pinedale and Big Piney put on great fireworks shows on the 4th of July to celebrate Independence Day. Personal fireworks are not allowed anywhere in the county at any time.
