Big Piney vs Mountain View Football
Final: Big Piney Punchers 8, Mt View Buffalos 34
by Barbara Mullin
September 14, 2007

Coach Joel Eskelsen's Comments:

Disappointing conclusion to a game that started off very well. The Punchers played a good first half limiting Mt. View to just 55 yards with their only score coming late in the 2nd quarter. The Puncher “O” also looked sharp on their opening drive moving the ball to within the five yard line. An errant snap halted the drive and the scoring threat was ended with a penalty and a blocked field goal.

The first half ended with Mt. View leading 6-0. The second half started out great with Mt. View being completely shut down with two losses and a safety for Big Piney as Chase Raza tackled a Buffalo runner in the end-zone. The Punchers then scored on a great catch by Drew Guenthner to put the Punchers ahead 8-6.

On the first play from scrimmage on Mt. View’s ensuing possession, Kyle Watson ran a 72 yd TD to enable the Buffs to retake the lead 12-8. The play seemed to demoralize the Punchers as on their next possession a penalty on the kick-off and fumble recovered for a TD quickly put the Punchers down 20-8. Neither the offense nor the defense was able to recover from that and Mt. View would score twice more in the fourth for a very comfortable 34-8 victory.

Individually, we did have some good performances. Offensively, Drew Guenthner and Mike Forrester picked up 46 and 44 yards on the ground. Defensively, John Colton led the team with 12 tackles. Interior linemen Greg Eiden, Taylor Moceika, and Chase Raza all collected 7 tackles with each having at least one tackle for a loss. Ben Howard collected the only turnover with an interception at the end of the 1st half.

The Punchers will need to improve in their consistency on both sides of the ball. A second improvement needs to be seen in their attitudes after the opponents score. We will need to be more confident in each other and mount scoring of our own rather than allowing frustration to control the game play.

Next is Kemmerer (3-0) at Kemmerer on Friday at 4:00. Kemmerer has a high scoring offense and is coming off a 49-20 win against Pinedale. That game will be followed by two home games with Pinedale on the 28th and the Homecoming vs Thermop on Oct. 5 in crucial play-off games.
