Freudenthal’s Superdelegate Vote goes to Obama
by Governor Freudenthal’s office
April 2, 2008

(CHEYENNE, Wyo.) – Governor Dave Freudenthal today announced his intention to cast his superdelegate vote at the Democratic National Convention for Senator Barack Obama, D-Ill.

The Governor issued the following statement:

“The Democrats are blessed with two qualified candidates for President. Wyoming is fortunate that both candidates campaigned aggressively and afforded many of our citizens a chance to ask questions and see the candidates and their campaigns ‘up close and personal.’ Their interest in Western issues was clearly evident, and we thank both of them for running.

The superdelegate procedure may be flawed, but it is what it is. It authorizes the superdelegate to reach an individual judgment as to which candidate to support. I have previously indicated to the Capitol press corps that I would notify them of my decision when it was reached. Each superdelegate should reach his or her own conclusion about whom to support, and the timing of any announcement. I have the same view regarding the controversy as to whether both candidates should remain in the race. It is the candidate’s decision.

I intend to cast my superdelegate vote for Senator Obama for three reasons:

1) Senator Obama has demonstrated an understanding of energy and environment issues both in person and in his public statements. I am sure I do not necessarily agree with every position taken by Senator Obama. It is important to remember I am not taking on either of the candidates as a family dependent. I am simply expressing a preference. But I am comfortable that he will be open to reason and discussion. This openness is incredibly important since the exact nature of the particular Western issues over the next four years remains unknown.

2) Senator Obama has the skills and energy to re-invigorate this nation. This includes the ability to bring people together. I was impressed by the cross-section of Wyoming citizens gathered at the University of Wyoming Arena Auditorium to hear and see Senator Obama.

In Wyoming, with its 65 percent plus Republican registration, this was not a gathering of die-hard Democrats. Our nation very much needs a President who can again rally what President Lincoln called the “better angels of our nature.” This endorsement reflects my belief that Senator Obama is that leader.

3) Perhaps most persuasive is the recognition that this election is about the future. Our decision is informed by the past but should not simply extend a paralyzed status quo. The negativity, partisanship and lack of purpose that characterize our national debate and government are crippling this country. While no one individual can effect this change alone, the change must begin with someone. Senator Obama is the Democratic candidate with the openness, honesty and skill to end this vicious cycle of business as usual.”
