April 4, 2008

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department issued its first weekly wolf report earlier today, and posted it on the agency's new wolf page on its website.

Here's what it said:

Wolf Report for the week ending April 4, 2008

The state of Wyoming officially assumed management authority for wolves on March 28, 2008. This report covers the period from March 28 through April 4.

Wolf Research
Nothing to report this week.

Wolf Monitoring
The department has contracted with USDA Wildlife Services to capture and radio-collar wolves on the South Fork of the Shoshone as part of the department's monitoring program. USDA Wildlife Services captured two wolves on Monday morning, both males, placed collars on them, and released them.

Reported Wolf Kills
Three wolves, one female and two males, were taken in the Predatory Animal area west of Daniel on Friday, March 28.

One male wolf was taken in the Predatory Animal area in the New Fork River area on Friday, March 28.

Depredation Investigations
The Game and Fish department has issued a lethal take permit for four wolves to a landowner on the South Fork of the Shoshone River due to problems with wolves harassing his cattle.

The Game and Fish Department has issued a lethal take permit to a landowner near Dubois for two wolves. There has been a confirmed wolf depredation of cattle on this ranch.

Information and Education
The department’s information and education staff answered numerous calls from the media and public this week. Most callers asked about the number of wolves killed in the Predatory Animal area this week, as well as pending lawsuits and a variety of questions about Wyoming’s wolf management plan. Information and Education staff is also preparing articles on wolf management for the May issues of Wyoming Wildlife magazine and Wyoming Wildlife News.

Other
The department will be interviewing applicants next week for a new wolf coordinator position to oversee the department’s wolf management program.
