Wyoming Artists Association held their annual convention in Casper recently, where Sublette County artists won some prestigious awards.

Ruth Rawhouser’s oil painting, “Boulders of the Big Sandy” was chosen to hang in the Governor’s Office for the coming year. Her painting, “Cool Waters”, and Charmian McLellan’s painting “Edge of the Meadow” were among a dozen chosen to hang in Washington DC at Wyoming Congressional offices for a year. Rawhouser also received 2nd place in Miniatures with “Barely There,” and Honorable Mention in Oils with “Now Comes Winter”.

McLellan also received 2nd in Oil with “July Along South Fork”, and 2nd in Pastel with “Rosco”.

Kay Meeks of Daniel received 1st place in Graphics with “Tyler Matthew Wood”, 1st in Oils with “Rainy Assets”, and honorable mention in the Governor’s show with “Blue Moo”.

Wilson artist, Dee Parker, a member of the local art group, “Mixed Media”, won the People’s Choice as well as 1st place in Pastels with “Misty Morning”. She also took 3rd in Oils with “Swimming Hole in the Hoback.

Debbie Despain served as the WAA secretary this year and will be the treasurer for next year’s convention in Cody. After serving a year as vice president, she will become president and host the WAA convention in the 2011.

The event started off with a lively quick draw on Friday evening. Paintings produced during the hour-long event were auctioned off to the audience. Saturday and half of Sunday were spent in the weekend’s workshops. Great inspiration came from portrait artist Tom Leopp of Casper and watercolor artist Joan Fullerton of Taos, NM. Jim Reed of Casper served as the show Judge. The business meeting took place Saturday during a luncheon. During the evening banquet, Ron Gregory of Riverton was announced as this year’s “Grand Wyoming Artist.”

The organization provides a boost of artistic energy and networking with other artists and events around the state. New members are being encouraged to join. Please contact Jamie Penuel, 1221 12 Street, Cody, WY 82414, 307-587-3217.
