Green River Valley Museum closed for the season

The Green River Valley Museum in Big Piney held an Open House on Tuesday, October 14th, for their final day of the season. The Open House was to give people who hadn't had a chance to visit yet to stop by and see the new displays.

Featured exhibits in the museum include prehistoric Indian artifacts, restored homesteader cabin, pioneer homesteading and townsite development, early ranching/branding, area oil and gas history, historic oil field tools, family-operated coal mines, Big Piney Examiner newspaper presses, Campfire Girls display, oral histories, visiting exhibits.

The Museum is open from June 15 to October 15th. It is a nonprofit corporation, formed to perpetuate and preserve the history and culture of the Green River Valley. Although it receives some support from Sublette County, it is largely dependent on funds from private sources for operations. Admission is by donation.

    Glen Wise built this motorized tobaggan around 1940 for his three small children to use to get to school. He also used it to get the the light plant that generated electricity for Pinedale.

    The first in the Big Piney shallow field blew in at the Corder Place on December 4, 1938. Tons of ice covered the derrick before the well was shut down six weeks later. This is one of the historic photos about the early oil and gas industry on display at the Green River Valley Museum in Big Piney. The Museum held their final Open House on Tuesday, October 14th. The Museum is now closed for the season. They will reopen again on June 15, 2009. Admission is by donation.
