October 15, 2009

On Friday, October 9th, during halftime at the Big Piney Homecoming game against Pinedale, the Upper Green River Sustainable Communities Endowment Fund gave $19,500 in grants to three Sublette County non-profit organizations. The UGR Fund gave $7500 to the Big Brothers, Big Sisters program, $5000 to the Pinedale Community Theatre and $7000 to the Pinedale Fine Arts Council.

The Upper Green River Sustainable Communities Endowment Fund was established by Shell Exploration & Production Company in June 2005 with a $1 million gift. The UGR Fund is designed to recognize the unique heritage, customs, culture and natural beauty of Sublette County, Wyoming while encouraging diversity, intelligent growth and sustained economic viability to support healthy multigenerational communities. The UGR Fund supports entities that strengthen community viability and promote collaborative efforts to enhance the quality of life for Sublette County, Wyoming residents. Nonprofit organizations with a 501(c)(3) designation or otherwise tax-exempt agencies that operate in the areas of Pinedale, Marbleton, Big Piney, Daniel or Boulder are eligible to apply.

The UGR Fund is managed by the Wyoming Community Foundation. The WYCF is a nonprofit charitable 501(c)3 publicly supported foundation which manages many individual funds contributed or bequeathed by individuals, families, corporations, nonprofit organizations and other sources. WCF makes grants to organizations across Wyoming based on the criteria of the individual funds.

Currently the UGR Committee advises on three funds. The Upper Green River Sustainable Communities Endowment Fund originally created by Shell Exploration and Production Company in 2005. After Pinedale philanthropist Gayle McMurry Kinnison passed away in December of 2006, the Wyoming Community Foundation asked the UGR advisory committee to make recommendations on the expenditures of the Gayle McMurry Kinnison Endowment Fund. Starting in 2007, they were able to make grants in Sublette County out of this fund. Additionally, the UGR Committee created a new fund called the Upper Green River Opportunities Fund in order to make grants throughout the county without geographic or area of interest restrictions.

Since 2005, the UGR Advisory Committee has distributed $165,000 in 18 grants through the Upper Green River Sustainable Communities Endowment Fund.

Since 2007, the UGR Advisory Committee has distributed $108,200 in 11 grants through the Gayle McMurry Kinnison Endowment Fund.

Since 2008, the UGR Advisory Committee has distributed a $5,000 grant from the Upper Green River Opportunities Fund.

Local contacts in Pinedale for the UGR Fund include Carolyn Bing and Martha Ptasnik. For more information on the UGR Fund, go to the Wyoming Community Foundation website www.wycf.org and click on "Grants" and "WYCF General Grants" to find an application. The next deadline for applications is November 1, 2009.
