Sen. Enzi backs debt task force to research financial state of federal government
Co-sponsors ‘Bipartisan Task Force for Responsible Fiscal Action Act of 2009’
by Senator Enzi media release
December 11, 2009

Washington, D.C. – In an effort to stop partisan bickering and start digging the country out of a financial debt crisis, U.S. Senator Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., joined fellow members of Congress to support a task force that would put the country on a fast track to being back in the black.

"Too many commissions and task forces are created to do research and make recommendations but their hard work never results in concrete legislative change. This task force is different - it would have real teeth backed by bicameral and bipartisan efforts. It is time both political parties stop bickering and fighting to claim credit for good ideas. We need to put our heads together and get this country out of financial ruin," said Enzi, member of the Senate Budget Committee.

Enzi co-sponsored S. 2853, the Bipartisan Task Force for Responsible Fiscal Action Act of 2009. The bill was sponsored by Senators Judd Gregg, R-N.H. and Kent Conrad, D-N.D and is supported by 18 Republicans and 13 Democrats. The bill is designed to review the entire financial state of the federal government, make recommendations as to how to best fix the problems, and then submit recommendations to Congress if 14 of the 18 task force members agree.

The task force would consist of 18 members, 10 Democrats (two from the Administration) and eight Republicans. Members must be currently serving in Congress or the Administration and their report must be submitted to Congress after 2010 election. The report would be fast-tracked in the Senate and the House with a final vote occurring before 111th Congress adjourns. The report would not be able to be amended and passage would require a supermajority of three-fourths of the Senate and House voting in favor.
