Ticks are out

April 11, 2010

This unwanted passenger was found after an outing along the banks of the New Fork River on Saturday.

The snow has melted off in many places now, tantalizing nature lovers to get outside again. Recreationists are encouraged to check themselves, their clothing, and their pets for hiding ticks when they get home. If left undetected, ticks can eventually embed into the skin and gorge themselves on blood before dropping off, potentially passing on dangerous diseases.

Ticks are known to be disease carriers for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Colorado Tick Fever, Tularemia (commonly known as "rabbit fever"), and Lyme Disease. Ticks are very small, approximately 1/4 inch long, and can be easily missed.
